Natural gas, an energetic ally for greenhouse productivity

Mexico City, March13, 2024.- Protected agriculture in Mexico, also known as greenhouses, is responsible for the annual production of 40 million tons of fruits and vegetables.2 However, this activity faces the challenge of achieving a responsible management of resources – such as water, soil and energy – to ensure its long-term sustainability and maintain its competitiveness in the national and international market.

In this sense, the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel for protected agriculture plays a key role in the production chain. It contributes to take maximum advantage of the raw materials used and has a consistent price stability.

The heating equipment required by greenhouses, especially medium and high technology greenhouses, benefit from using natural gas because, unlike LPG, it allows them to maintain a controlled flow with pressure stability and without variations. This avoids temperature fluctuations and favors 100% combustion efficiency. In addition, the use of CO2 in crop development helps to improve production and pest control.

According to the Mexican company’s executive, there is still a lack of knowledge in this sector about the benefits of natural gas and its availability for greenhouses. In its liquid format (LNG) it is possible to take it to any point in the country through virtual pipelines and by installing cryogenic stations. Apart from being automated, the stations facilitate dedicated service and guarantee on-site storage and 24/7 supply, thanks to their telemetry.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development show that during the last two years, the area of protected agriculture has grown by approximately 2,000 hectares per year. This sector generates an average of 1.2 billion dollars in foreign currency from fruit and vegetable exports.

Part of Énestas' commitment is to create the infrastructure and logistics that companies need. In the case of greenhouses, we understand the nature of the industry and the need to offer comprehensive and scalable solutions, capable of adapting to seasonality and consumption peaks caused by factors such as the weather.

The company also asserts that the use of LNG allows users to achieve savings of up to 30% in fuel costs, which can make the difference for companies to develop and achieve their economic, social and environmental objectives.

Énestas will share space with other agribusiness leaders at the GreenTech Americas expo at the Querétaro Congress Center from March 12-14 at STAND 634. Attendees will be able to learn about trends and exchange experiences with the aim of fostering Mexico’s development.
