Access to natural gas, key for SMEs to take advantage of nearshoring

Only the northern and central states of Mexico have a distribution infrastructure.

Mexico City, October 2, 2023.– In Mexico there are around four million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), of which 570,000 1 specialize in the manufacturing sector. They are spread throughout the country and would be able to take advantage of the nearshoring boom if they did not face the challenge of accessing fuels such as natural gas.

In this regard, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) assures that, without an extensive network of gas pipelines, the benefits of regionalization of value chains will remain in the areas that today concentrate the export manufacturing industry, i.e. the northern and central states of the country. 2

Faced with the challenge of developing a distribution infrastructure for this type of fuel, natural gas stations have become an alternative for small- and medium-scale users. They provide easy access to fuels that allow such users to achieve energy efficiency and, consequently, increase their competitiveness.

“For many companies, this type of solution solves the lack of infrastructure in remote sites, as they have the capacity to be installed anywhere in the country. This ensures the operability of their logistics chains while at the same time reducing fuel costs,”said Caio Zapata, Énestas CEO.

According to the executive of the Mexican company, this type of station is easy to install and can be adapted to the needs of customers. In addition, it allows the metering of energy consumption at any time of the year.

This way of making natural gas available bridges the gap between companies that have pipeline access and those that do not yet have a constant supply. Gas is one of the most efficient, affordable, safe and sustainable fuels.

Caio Zapata will share the forum with other international industry leaders to discuss the market, challenges and great potential of liquefied natural gas as one of the fuels of the present and future. The event will take place during the 3rd Global LNG International Forum from October 2-4 in Cartagena, Colombia.
