These taxes are a fiscal contribution of a regulatory nature and not a tax collection measure. They are levied for pollution and environmental damage derived from industrial activity, mainly in the chemical, oil, mining, manufacturing and energy generation sectors.
Although polluters pay, these measures also represent an opportunity for companies and consumers to adopt more sustainable practices, policies and technologies, thus boosting energy transition and environmental protection.
According to Marcela Gastélum, assistant sales manager at Énestas.
To date, of Mexico’s 32 states, only 15 contemplate collecting resources for this concept. Measures include levying taxes on the purchase of certain fuels or new motor vehicles; on the extraction and use of stone materials, soil and subsoil; on the emission of pollutants into the atmosphere and water; on the uncontrolled discharge of wastewater, and on the development and use of pesticides.
In this regard, the executive underlined that the use of natural gas or liquefied natural gas, in addition to reducing the operating costs of companies in terms of energy, reduces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere compared to other fossil fuels such as diesel, fuel oil or LP gas, thus representing a further step towards the energy transition.
These environmental policies seek to create regulatory frameworks that discourage activities emitting high levels of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), make the most polluting energy sources more expensive and allocate the resources collected to finance programs and projects to mitigate climate change.
Marcela Gastélum added.
