The evolving role of women in access to raw materials and fuels

An article by CAF (Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean) reports that in recent years the role of women in society has undergone significant changes. Nevertheless, domestic work persists. It is a role traditionally assigned to women by society, for which access to energy is crucial. According to the article, in rural areas, women are responsible for procuring the energy needed to run the household, which includes obtaining firewood for cooking and keeping it warm during the winter, among other tasks. The data is revealing and shows a significant gap in terms of gender representation and equity in the energy sector. According to the International Energy Agency, only 24% of the global energy sector is made up of women, and there is a 15% wage gap compared to jobs held by men. In addition, the Women’s Energy Network’s “Gender Roadmap for Energy Transition” reveals that, in the Mexican labor market, only 0.46% of women in the sector are in decision-making positions.

Despite the growing participation of women in management and strategic positions, such as Tania Ortiz Mena López Negrete, president of Sempra Infraestructura para México, Angélica Ruiz Celis, senior vice president for Latin America and president of BP México (formerly British Petroleum), and Rosa Elena Torres Ortiz, head of the technical management and planning unit of CENAGAS (National Natural Gas Control Center), the sector still faces challenges in ensuring equal opportunities. For women to occupy strategic positions that enable them to influence decision-making, it is crucial to understand that gender equity goes beyond our mere presence; it is about valuing and highlighting each person’s individual knowledge, interests and skills, especially in male-dominated industries. At Énestas, we pursue this change in the sector by providing the tools and training necessary for women in middle management to access executive positions. Currently, more than 20% of our employees in middle management are women, which demonstrates a real commitment to promoting job growth with a gender perspective. The road to enhancing the role of women in the energy industry still has some challenges to overcome, but with a strong focus on gender, we can move towards a more inclusive and equitable future in all areas of work.
